Read Free E-Books with Project Gutenberg

So, you have decided to invest time in learning English faster. Here is an amazing tip for you. Read books while listening to them.

It is now so much easier to be able to do this with the available technology. I want to share with you one that will not cost you a penny!

I have discovered this amazing website, Project Gutenberg. There are so many classic books and others to read for free. And you don’t even have to visit the local library.

Here is the URL: https://www.gutenberg.org/

“Project Gutenberg is a library of over 60,000 free eBooks. Choose among free epub and Kindle eBooks, download them or read them online. You will find the world’s great literature here, with focus on older works for which U.S. copyright has expired. Thousands of volunteers digitized and diligently proofread the eBooks, for enjoyment and education.”

Click on the link “Book search,” and type the name of the book you are searching for. Or you can always browse for books. My recommendation would be the children’s books to start with.

I typed in Little Women because I really like that book. After I pressed the search (enter key), I got the results. Right there!

When I click on the book, the next screen gives me options for reading the book. I choose the first option: Read this book online.

The next screen starts with the title, the author, and the table of contents. I can either scroll down to get to the first chapter or click on the chapter title to start reading.

Here we have the book ready to read!

Project Gutenberg has an app for smartphones and tablets.

Listen to Free Audio-books with LibriVox.org

Now let us find free audio-books on LibriVox.org. When we plug in the URL, the screen below comes up.

I can either browse their catalog, scroll down and see their latest additions, or start my search directly from the search box.

You can browse the catalog by clicking on the box.

You can scroll down to see their latest additions and news. Or you can type in the search box the title of the book you are looking for.

I will just type Little Women in the search box to match the book I will be reading.

After I click the search button, I get the results on the next screen.

All I have to do now is to click on the chapter title to listen to the audio.

LibriVox also offers an app for smartphones and tablets. See below:

Time to Read and Listen to a Book Simultaneously!

You can open up two browsers side by side. Pull up the eBook from Project Gutenberg on one and the audio file from LibriVox on another.

Start the audio as you read the book! Congratulations. Now you are on your way to improve your reading, listening, pronunciation, and vocabulary! So, what will you read/listen to next?
